Awesome Grinder! I had a competing brands manual grinder prior to this for travel, which had a 38mm burr in it and the standard grind adjustment underneath the screw in catch-cup. The pineapple burr in this creates a lovely cup and I love that there's a general guide on the funnel cap for immersion/pour over/espresso ranges. Obviously, those ranges will widely vary based on beans, dose, recipe etc, but it let me jump right in without knowing too much about the grinder and get to where I needed to be within 2-3 brews. I have not yet used this for espresso, I have a heavy duty electric grinder that I normally use for that, which this was not meant to replace. That said, I normally run convex step down baskets which support a coarse grind, so I have no doubt I can get good espresso out of it, especially since I run low fines filter burrs on my electric grinder that I normally use for espresso. Perhaps I'll try out this grinder for espresso soon, but in the future I plan to add a picopress or other travel espresso gadget to my travel coffee kit alongside this grinder. I have since used it as my morning filter grinder (to not disturb my partner) and I throw it in my backpack to bring with me to work for afternoon brews. In a few months it will also be my travel grinder when I head to some work conferences.
The grinding mechanism paired with the pineapple burr has been very smooth, even if it I get a 'hitch' while grinding it is almost no extra effort to grind through it. Reviews I watched prior to buying mentioned a rattling noise if you did not hold the catch cup at the same time, I have not experienced this. There is a thin rubber gasket on the catch cup and that seems to stop that rattle, so perhaps this is a silent revision they did to resolve that feedback from the community. Thus far I have never held the catch cup while grinding and I have not heard the rattling the reviews I watched talked about/demonstrated.
Speaking of the catch cup, the 'bayonet' style click in catch cup mechanism is a dream. Not worries it will fall off like magnets, or magnets being too strong to avoid the issue that it is hard to remove. Significantly less fiddling than the standard screw on catch cups. Align, quarter twist, and done. Every hand grinder should use this mechanism. The grinder adjustment mechanism is also very nice to use, it is smooth with a good feeling soft tactile click. My only grip here is where it is positioned means searching for it to see where your current grind size is at and where you're setting it to. The ticks and the font are small as well as the red indicator arrow. I feel this could have been a bit larger to make it easier to find/read.
Taste in the cup has been great- clear and sweet. I've gotten more enjoyable brews so far than my previous manual grinder this is replacing. And the brew quality with it so far has had me not reaching to adjust my electric grinder in the morning (which has 80 mm flat filter burrs). Not to say this is on par with that electric grinder, but it is more than enough to let me keep that one where it is for espresso and still be happy with the filter brew I make right before work.
Main gripes are the text/readability of the grind size adjustment mechanism, and the overall size/weight. It is pretty large, some 3/4's of my forearm (I'm ~6 feet tall) and while I don't have a problem griping it with my hands, I can see people with smaller hands having an issue. It is also pretty hefty with the overall size and its mostly metal construction. But it is phenomenally designed so I find this tradeoff worth it.
I would say if you can get this at a discount (I grabbed it for 20% off during the anniversary sale), it is a great buy.
Great product, beautifully made. It is a 'challenging' grind, a bit of an early morning workout...but worth it.
Grab this hand grinder if it's on sale. In the cup it acts like a ZP6 with more body. It's a really well balanced hand grinder and the build quality is incredible.
one of the best handmill on market.
Makes great coffees, my only complaint is that the wood surface in the black version is too smooth and don't have enough grip.
Had it less than a month and the inner bearing became unseated and a weird stalling sensation when grinding beans like the burrs refused to turn. For such an expensive grinder, you would think it would be reliable. Before anyone says anything, i have my reliable timemore S3. Not a single problem AND its cheaper.
Elegant device!
Pleasure to use and great for both modern espresso and pourover
Love it!
I have a lot of hand grinders, but this is by far my favorite. Let me address a couple of the main criticism of this grinder first
The big one (no pun intended) is that it’s too heavy
Fair enough. There’s no denying it’s weight. I don’t have overly large hands to hold the grinder and it would be extremely difficult to hold while grinding beans for about 60 seconds
My solution to this is very simple. Sit and rest the grinder on your thigh. I tilt the M01 at angle to slow feed the beans and it makes it even easier to turn the crank
I find this to be an enjoyable way to spend the time while I wait for the water to heat up
Lastly, the straight handle. I’ve seen multiple comments online complain about the straight handle. Resting it on your thigh at an angle really does help with that
That pineapple burr is amazing and along with the precision bearings, makes the act of grinding light roast beans a complete joy!
The flavor is between the C40 and ZP6
