Sculptor 064S Gen II
The first 064S has been with us since 2022, and it has been a favorite within the community and in our office. Espresso and milk is where we like it best: the burrs build a cup that's big and round, the kind most people take to on the first sip.
When the 064S Gen II went into development, the pattern in the feedback was hard to miss. What people posted on forums, and what they told us in person at coffee events, was almost never about the coffee. It was about living with the machine. That left the second generation with an unusual brief: leave the burrs alone, and rebuild everything around them.
Two steps to the burrs
Our first-gen 064S required a Phillips head screwdriver to get into the machine. With the second-gen 064S, we made accessing the burr carrier completely toolless — and fast. Pull off the grind dial, twist out the burr carrier, and you're in. We even certified the burr carrier to stay aligned within 5,000 cycles, so you don't need to do the agonizing whiteboard marker and shim alignment. It's all done for you, straight from the factory. Putting everything back is the same two moves in reverse. Sculptor even keeps your grind setting.
The hopper
Perhaps the single most maligned feature across our first-generation Sculptors was the hopper. Finding the right design proved surprisingly difficult: we wanted it to feed coffee gradually into the burrs while still being wide enough to accommodate your average Pacamara.
The solution worked, but it required a lid — and every Sculptor owner forgot to close it at least once. Bean fragments would occasionally escape the grind chamber and land on the counter, a phenomenon the community came to call "popcorning." It was, by some distance, the most common complaint we received about the original design.
The new hopper is taller with a steeper slope inside, so gravity does more of the work and beans feed rather than jump. We also made a new anti-popcorning shield which extends to the corners of the hopper. At the top, the magnetic lid is easy to slide back and forth, and no longer needs to be fully lifted away unless you want to. Loading is easier for it: slide the lid half open, pour your weighed dose in, and close it if you wish.
The mount is the other major change. Rather than threading into place, the hopper is now magnetic: lift it off, set it back down, and there's nothing to unscrew.
We've deliberately left the design open, too. You can develop your own hopper, share designs with others, or use a compatible third-party option. Plenty of people running grinders in this class prefer some form of slow-feed hopper, and this mount was designed to make that kind of experimentation possible.
A built-in safety switch ensures that the grinder cannot start unless a hopper is properly installed.
One knob, where two things used to be
Two changes here, and they compound.
The speed dial moved to the side. On the first 064S it sat on the back of the machine — out of sight, and awkward to reach. Changing your RPM could be a bit of a challenge if your machine was pushed up against a backsplash.
And it's now part of the control you start the grinder with. The power button sits at the center; the RPM Dial turns around it. Press the power button to run, turn the ring to set your speed — 800 to 1600 RPM, up from the first generation's 1200 ceiling. Power and speed used to be two things in two places. They're one thing now, under one hand.
We've also included better fault and operation indicators. The ring lights up while the grinder runs, and goes dark when it stops. If the burrs jam, it flashes five times, with a short tone repeating alongside it. If the motor runs hot, it holds white and then fades, with a long tone repeating three times.
It also stops on its own. When the beans are through, the grinder senses it, runs on for another fifteen seconds, and shuts down.
A scale you can read at a glance
Our first-generation Sculptors placed the grind adjustment scale on the front of the dial, with the red setting indicator positioned on the right side of the machine. Over time, we realized that this made less sense in practice than it did on paper: most of us were looking down at the grinder, not straight at it, which meant crouching down to read the setting accurately.
So we moved everything upward. The new grind indicator now sits at the 12 o'clock position, while the scale has been moved to the side of the dial. The result is a setting that is much easier to read at a glance — and much easier to dial in precisely.
As always, one full turn covers the whole range — 16 marked increments, espresso between 1 and 4, moka 3 to 5, pourover 8 to 13, French press 13 to 16. It stops at both ends, so there's no going past the range and no wondering which turn you're on. Each marking corresponds to 0.0033mm on a 0.6mm thread — fine enough to make minute changes in the espresso range, while its stepless design makes it easy to jump between grind settings for different brew methods.
Three small things
The catch cup was reshaped for a 58mm portafilter. It still seats itself magnetically under the chute, the way the first generation did. What changed is the rim — it's shaped to dose straight into a 58mm basket, saving you from the occasional spill.
The Rotary Knocker carries over, rebuilt. It was on the first generation and it stays, with an upgraded structure. A twist retracts the chute and shakes off the fines and chaff that static holds onto, so retention isn't something you manage between doses.
The power cord plugs in at a right angle. It still detaches, the way the first generation's did, but we opted for a new, low-profile design. The plug turns and runs flat against the body instead of sticking straight out the back, which is a few centimeters of counter depth you get to keep when the grinder sits against a wall.
Two versions: 064S II or 064SSP II (coming May 2027)
Same body, same controls, same everything else. The only difference is what's cutting — the 064S II runs our own 64mm flats, the 064SSP II runs SSP's Multipurpose burrset. It's a real difference, not a spec-sheet one.
The short version: the 064SSP II is the modern one; the 064S II is the traditional one.
SSP's Multipurpose set is named for what it does — it works for both filter and espresso. Fewer fines is the reason: espresso pulled on this kind of burr tends toward high clarity, high separation, and a thin body. That's what makes it the better filter burr of the two, and it works particularly well for light-roast espresso where you are trying to retain origin character — bright, single origin shots with long ratios past the traditional 1:2. Thin body is the point rather than a shortcoming, though a dark roast pulled on it reads better on its own than under milk.
The 064S set is the traditional espresso burr. Good body and great texture, which is what medium and dark roasts are after and what holds up in milk. If your espresso is going into a cappuccino or flat white in the morning, this is the one.
Neither set is new to this generation, and neither was redesigned for it. This is where the second generation deliberately didn't break what already worked — the grind wasn't the part people were writing to us about.

Frequently Asked Questions
What changed from the 064S?
While the burrs stayed the same, everything around them changed: a toolless burr carrier, a magnetic hopper redesigned so beans stop bouncing, an integrated RPM dial and power button, the grind indicator moved to the top of the machine, a 58mm-friendly magnetic catch cup, and a low-profile power cord.
Do I need tools to access the burrs?
No. The grind dial pulls off and the burr carrier releases by hand. The air blower and brush for the cleaning itself are included.
Does it grind differently from the first generation?
No. Same burr set, same coffee. However, the 064S Gen II does feature a higher RPM ceiling, up from 1200 RPM to 1600 RPM.
Which version should I get?
If you brew a lot of pourover, or like your espresso modern and high-clarity, go for the 064SSP II. If you pull traditional espresso with body and texture, especially into milk, opt for the 064S II. Both handle espresso and filter either way. The 064SSP II is coming May 2027.
